YouGov has found out that 68% of the adults across 17 countries play competitive video games weekly. It leads to high demand for gaming content, forming a vast fanbase for the influencers in the esports sector.
One in ten respondents follows a gaming influencer
According to the YouGov study, almost half (43%) of the respondents follow a social media persona, but only one out of ten consumers (9%) follow a gaming influencer. At the same time, young males aged between 17 and 34 and teens are more likely to take interest in influencers in the esports niche. 23% of young male consumers follow a gamer on social media, which is higher than the number of sports and music influencer followers. Plus, gaming bloggers are the second most-followed type of influencer (36%) among the US teens, falling behind music bloggers (38%).
The research also shows that the Asian markets have the highest proportion of esports influencer followers. In China and Indonesia, 20% of the total population follow gaming bloggers, and the percentage rises to 29% and 36%, respectively, among young males. At the same time, Europeans show less interest in the cybersports content. Countries like Sweden, Denmark, and the UK have less than 5% of gaming influencer followers.
The popularity of gaming live streams is growing rapidly
An increase in the number of hours of video game streams watched reflects a growing demand for live gaming content. From Q3 2019 to Q2 2021, the number of hours of esports live streams watched doubled, rising from 3.8bn to 9bn. It also led to significant growth in the number of gaming influencers on the live streaming platforms, like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming. Twitch.tv remains the most popular platform for hot streamers in the esports niche, with 7bn hours of views only in the second quarter of 2021.
